Root Canal Therapy

 Root Canal Treatment

A Root Canal Treatment is generally required when the cavity has been so deep that it has reached or damaged the nerve of the tooth. It is usually recommended by dentists to save the tooth. If left untreated, the infection can progress to the stage where you will need to remove it.

Root Canal Treatment is completed through three stages.

  • Removal of the infected nerve/s
  • Disinfection of each canal then followed by placing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial medication inside each canal.
  •  To protect the inside of the tooth once it has all been cleaned thoroughly, the root canals will be sealed off.

After all stages have been completed, a root canal treated tooth will have higher risks of fracture as they are brittle. Therefore it is recommended to have a Crown fitted soon after the treatment.

Why do I need a Crown after Root Canal Treatment?

  • To protect, strengthen and further seal the tooth
  • Restore normal function and occlusion (the way the upper and lower teeth contact each other when biting and chewing)
  • Restore or enhance the cosmetic appearance of the tooth

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

  • Dull or mild Pain
  • Sensitivity to cold/hot food or drinks
  • Facial swelling
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Swelling or soreness in the gums surrounding the tooth
  •  Abscess that may be present on the gum above/below the tooth

Occasionally these symptoms may come and go, however if you do not treat the root of the problem, severe pain and abscesses can occur. If an abscess is left untreated, the spread of infection can damage the bone surrounding the root causing problems for the tooth itself and may also potentially harm neighbouring teeth.

If you are experiencing some of these symptoms please give us a call or make an online enquiry as soon as possible. We are open 7 days a week and with flexible appointment times to help you with all your dental problems.
